About Manizales

Before visiting a city, it helps to know as much as possible so your trip goes smoothly. Here's everything you need to know about Manizales: its weather, the best time to go and our top tips for your visit.

Weather

Manizales has a mountain climate, with daytime temperatures between 12 °C and 20 °C and cool nights. Being so close to Nevado del Ruiz, the weather can change quickly: sun, fog and rain on the same day are normal, so dress in layers. Rain is more likely from May to November, but prices drop and there are fewer crowds.

When to visit Manizales

The best time to visit is from December to February, when the weather is more stable and major events take place, such as the Manizales Fair in January, with its International Coffee Pageant, horseback parades and live music. Mid-year is also a good time to go, during the Theater Festival.

Tips for your visit

Where to stay: there are options for every budget. For a good location, we recommend staying near the historic center or in the Chipre area, with valley views and easy access to restaurants and lookouts.

Best times to explore the city: use your mornings to head up Nevado del Ruiz or go on nature tours, when skies are usually clearer; in the afternoon, fog often rolls into the higher areas.

Enjoy the city safely: it's a cool, hilly city, so bring warm clothes and comfortable shoes for the steep streets; if you go up to Nevado del Ruiz or Los Nevados, always travel with a licensed operator and check the park's access conditions beforehand.

Budget: Manizales is one of the most affordable destinations in the Coffee Region. These figures are for reference only and may vary by season and provider:

  • Budget trip: between 150,000 and 220,000 COP per day (hostel, set lunch, public transport and cable car).
  • Mid-range trip: between 400,000 and 600,000 COP per day (3–4-star hotel, mid-range restaurants, a tour such as Nevado del Ruiz or a coffee farm).
  • High-end/luxury trip: from 1,000,000 COP per day (boutique hotel or luxury coffee farm, private tours, chef-driven cuisine).
