About Armenia

Before visiting a city, it helps to know as much as possible so your trip goes smoothly. Here's everything you need to know about Armenia: its weather, the best time to go and our top tips for your visit.

Weather

Armenia enjoys a mild climate all year, with temperatures between 18 °C and 28 °C. Being in the heart of coffee country, short afternoon downpours are normal, so bring a light jacket or an umbrella.

When to visit Armenia

Thanks to its stable climate, you can visit at any time of year. It's worth checking Quindío's festival calendar, including Armenia's Anniversary Festival (October) and the National Yipao Contest in Calarcá, two of the region's signature events.

Tips for your visit

Where to stay: there are options for every budget. Armenia has much of Quindío's hotel supply and is a good base for reaching the theme parks and nearby towns such as Salento, Filandia or Quimbaya.

Best times to explore the region: the area's theme parks are usually open all day, so use the morning for the farthest one (in Quimbaya or Montenegro) and save the afternoon for getting around Armenia.

Enjoy the city safely: as in any city, don't show off valuables and use licensed transport or apps such as DiDi or InDriver at night or to reach parks outside the urban area.

Budget: Armenia is one of the most affordable destinations in the Coffee Region. These figures are for reference only and may vary by season and provider:

  • Budget trip: between 150,000 and 220,000 COP per day (hostel, street food or set lunch, public transport).
  • Mid-range trip: between 450,000 and 650,000 COP per day (3–4-star hotel, mid-range restaurants, entry to a theme park such as Parque Los Arrieros).
  • High-end/luxury trip: from 1,100,000 COP per day (boutique coffee farm or 5-star hotel, private tours to several parks, chef-driven cuisine).

Things to do in Armenia

Armenia is the gateway to the Coffee Region's best-known theme parks and landscapes: from muleteer culture to the world's tallest wax palms, the region has something for every taste.

Must-sees

PANACA

In Quimbaya, PANACA is one of the country's largest theme parks devoted to rural life: livestock, poultry, pig farming, silk farming and organic agriculture, with shows and interactive activities for the whole family.

Parque del Café

In Montenegro, this park combines coffee history and culture with more than 20 attractions, including roller coasters and rides, ideal for a full day of family fun.

Recuca (Coffee Culture Tour)

On a traditional farm near Armenia, Recuca offers a full immersion in the coffee process: walks through hillside coffee fields, bean sorting, washing and drying, and a tasting of freshly roasted coffee.

Cocora Valley and Salento

An hour from Armenia, the Cocora Valley is home to the Quindío wax palm, Colombia's national tree, set in cloud-forest scenery. The nearby town of Salento, with its colorful façades and main square, rounds off one of the most popular day trips in the Coffee Region.

Quindío Botanical Garden

In Calarcá, trails wind past a butterfly house, native forest and a wide variety of plants, ideal for a relaxed outing close to nature.

La Carbonera

Also known as "Tochecito" or the "Wax Palm Forest", it lies in Tolima, on the other side of the mountain range, and offers the same appeal as the Cocora Valley on a grander scale: everything here is bigger, wilder and better preserved, and you can explore Colombia's densest wax palm forest. The climb is demanding and can only be done in a 4x4 jeep, which we provide so you can enjoy the adventure and the best views. Book the La Carbonera tour here.

Parque Los Arrieros

In Quimbaya, a short drive from Armenia, Parque Los Arrieros recreates the muleteer culture that shaped the Paisa settlement of the coffee region: the sugar-cane mill and coffee process, the muleteers' fonda, live música montañera (Andean country music) and trova, buggy rides and a playground surrounded by nature. This experience is now available to book on Exploreti.

Reference price: 69,000 COP per adult and 48,000 COP per child at the box office.

Getting around Armenia

Armenia has a wide range of public and private transport options. Here's what you need to know about each one.

Taxis and ride-hailing apps

Taxis are available throughout the city; for extra safety and more predictable fares, we recommend apps such as DiDi or InDriver.

Armenia Bus Terminal

It connects the city with nearby towns such as Salento, Filandia, Quimbaya and Montenegro, plus long-distance routes to other Colombian cities.

Getting to the theme parks

Most of the parks (Parque Los Arrieros, PANACA and Parque del Café) are 20 to 45 minutes from Armenia, in the towns of Quimbaya and Montenegro; you can get there by public transport from the bus terminal, by taxi or on an organized tour.

From the airport

Armenia is served by El Edén International Airport (AXM) in La Tebaida, about 20–30 minutes from downtown.

Food in Armenia

The food of Quindío is a reason to visit Armenia in itself.

Bandeja paisa

The region's signature dish: beans, rice, pork crackling, chorizo, ground beef, fried egg, arepa and avocado.

Trout

A freshwater fish that's very popular in the coffee region; it's grilled, fried or served in a sauce, with patacón (fried green plantain) and salad.

Sancocho

A traditional soup with meat, plantain, potato and vegetables, a classic at family tables across Quindío.

Arepas and street food

Armenia's Granada neighborhood is the place for street food: arepas, skewers, empanadas, corn cake and fritanga, perfect for eating well for under 20,000 COP.

Where to eat

Downtown Armenia and the Granada neighborhood offer the best mix of traditional Quindío restaurants, specialty coffee shops and artisan bakeries.
